PTUK works closely through its affiliation with PTI and also with the IBECPT particularly in connection with training and professional accreditation standards.

PTI - Play Therapy International

PTI is the international organisation for professional play therapists and child psychotherapists. The mandate of PTI includes: the maintenance of an internationally representative professional association for professional play therapists and child psychotherapists; the provision of a professional body offering Certification as a Child Psychologist and Play Therapist on an international basis; the provision of training for play therapists and child psychotherapists. The promotion and advancement of discussion, education and research in child psychotherapy and play therapy. PTI hosts and co-hosts international conferences on play therapy.

IBECPT

The International Board of Examiners of Certified Play Therapists (IBECPT) as an organisation is totally independent of PTUK and PTI.  It is based in Ontario, Canada.

The IBECPT is a professional body governing play therapy certification on an international basis. Certification is a rigorous process with stringent requirements.  The standards having been set by IBECPT are then administered through PTI and its affiliated organisations.

The IBECPT list of areas of study and knowledge that should be included:
  1. Child and Human Development including psychosocial, sexual and physiological development through the life cycle. Play Therapists must have this knowledge to assist in assessment of a child's present skill level and deviations from their own expected developmental milestones.
  2. Child & Adolescent Behavioural Disorders
  3. Theories of Personality.
  4. Marital and Family Issues. This requirement is seen as essential in order to understand external systemic issues that can have significant impact on a child's well-being and behaviour.
  5. Principles of the Therapeutic Process.
  6. Ethics (including legal issues of child protection and family law).
  7. Pharmacology. An understanding of the effects of psychopharmaceutics as well as common, over the counter" medications on children.
  8. Research and Evaluation Methods. A thorough understanding of: i) statistical evaluation, ii) empirical research methods, and iii) up-to-date research in developmental psychology and child therapy.
