Training as a Play Therapy Trainer

The rapid growth of play therapy and filial play worldwide is to a large extent constrained by the lack of qualified trainers.  APAC, a sister organisation of PTUK, provides free training for suitably experienced  Members to become Certified Trainers and Course Directors.

The opportunity is to deliver APAC's range of accredited and highly successful training courses in the UK, Ireland and other countries.  Cohorts will normally range between 8 and 24 students.  A Course Director and an Assistant Course Director is provided for larger courses, where necessary. In-house courses as well as open courses are run.

The current range of courses, for which Course Directors are required is:

  • One-day Introductory Events

  • Certificate in Filial Play Coaching/Mentoring

  • Post Graduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Play Therapy

The training programme is at stage 4 of the PTUK four stage training model

Course Directors must have the ability to:

  • Deliver the course content as specified in detail in the Course Directors' manuals and as accredited using a variety of teaching and learning methods.  This includes leading group exercises and giving PowerPoint presentations for practical and theoretical content.

  • Organise and support specialist facilitators.  Be able to stand in for specialist facilitators.

  • Provide emotional support for students during and as a result of the experiential exercises.

  • Support students in their written work.  Monitor students' progress. Answer students' questions.  Manage equipment and stocks of material.

  • Course Directors are required to sign a contract which clearly specifies their responsibilities to maintain the high quality of APAC's courses and protect APAC's intellectual property rights.  APAC will use its best efforts to provide the number of training days (up to 100) which the Course Director wishes to undertake in a year.  Remuneration is on a sliding scale according to experience and performance in the role.

  • The flexible training programme consists of peer observation (both directions) and a series of one or two day briefings and practice sessions.  There is no charge for the training but participants have to pay their own travel and accommodation expenses.

  • Applicants must have been trained as a PTUK Certified Supervisor and either have the MA in Practice Based Play Therapy or 450 clinical hours. Ideally all three.
