The course is designed for workers in the caring professions who already work alongside children and adolescents and/or have some counselling skills training.  The course is at stage 1 of the PTUK four stage training model
Learning Objectives Aims of Course:
  • To enhance participants' ability to work with children and adolescents (7-16 yrs.)
  • To relate the use of counselling skills to workplace and agency settings
  • To raise awareness of the legal and ethical issue involved when working with children and adolescents, particularly Child Protection matters and codes of ethics
  • To enhance participants' professional and personal development

At the end of the course participants will:

  • Have an understanding of appropriate counselling skills and processes relevant to childhood developmental stages when working with 7-16yr olds
  • Have a heightened awareness of working within Child Protection regulations and guidance
  • Be able to demonstrate their own communication processes through the acquisition of creative skills when using imagery and imagination
  • Understand more fully the role of the counsellor when working with young people and will be able to consider more effectively whether or not to continue with further training in this specialist field
  • Have had the benefit of experiencing working in a peer learning environment where participants will have had the opportunity to share their own specific contributions

 

Course Structure  Unit 1

Developmental theories and life stages. Consideration will be given to the fact that many practising counsellors use a combination of more than one theory.

Unit 2

Considers the role of counselling young people and will provide the context for the learning of skills to use imagery and the imagination, whilst paying particular attention to the legal/ethical frameworks.

Unit 3

Facilitates a look at one's own attributes with regard to working with young people in a counselling setting and to develop further awareness through the use of creative processes

34 x 3 hour weekly sessions - Thursdays 4pm - 7pm
