How to get to Quarry Bank Mill
Photographs
Quarry Bank Mill and the Styal Estate once
belonged to the wealthy Greg family who founded the Mill and gave the
property to the National Trust. It is a very appropriate venue for
training to help children. Unpaid child apprentices, worked at the mill
until 1847. Greg employed Peter Holland, as mill doctor, to be
responsible for the health of the children and other workers, and was
the first doctor to be employed in such a capacity. The children lived
in a separate building near the factory called the Apprentice House,
which now shows what 'home life' was like for the pauper children who
worked in the Mill in the 1830s. The adjoining garden contains
traditional varieties of vegetables, fruit and herbs, as well as geese
and hens.
Quarry Bank Mill is one of Britain's greatest
industrial heritage sites, including a complete working cotton mill It has
the most powerful working waterwheel in Europe and one of the earliest
steam-powered beam engines The woodland and riverside walks provide a
tranquil contrast
Our courses are held in a separate, quiet, restored building near the main mill building.
